January Newsletter

We hope everyone has had a great start to their 2013!  Even though football season has come to an end, we still have some exciting months ahead of us for the OU Club of Colorado.  We have basketball watch parties, a Thunder game, the Future Sooners Reception and our scholarship application is now available!
OU vs Kansas Basketball Watch Party
Saturday, January 26th the OU Men’s basketball team will travel to Lawrence to take on the #3 Kansas Jayhawks.  The game tips off at 2:00 MST.  We will be planning a few basketball watch parties this season and THIS Saturday will be our first official one.  Come to Stoney’s to watch the game with other OU fans. Stoney’s is also home to the Kansas alumni group.

OKC Thunder and OU Club of Colorado Night Out
If you have not already, get your discounted club level seats for the March 1st Thunder/Nuggets game.  We reserved 100 tickets and only have about 10 left. To purchase tickets visit: www.nuggetstix.com/ouclubofcolorado or contact Brad Currier at 303-405-1334 for tickets and questions.  We will host a happy hour prior to the event with more details on that to come.

2013-2014 Scholarship Applications
I am pleased to announce that we are now accepting applications for our 2013-2014 scholarships.  Applications can be turned in from now until the May 1st deadline. The application is attached with more information or you can find it online through our website here:https://ouclubofco.files.wordpress.com/2012/05/scholarship-app-2013-template.pdf. A big thanks to Haley Wallace for volunteering to chair the committee again this year as well as the number of members that have volunteered to sit on the committee.  For anyone that is familiar with our past scholarship form, we have two important changes to this year’s application.  We are now offering a choice of three different essay questions (only need to choose one question) as well as requiring a copy of an unofficial high school or college transcript for all applicants.  For scholarship questions, please do not hesitate to email Haley or Kristin atouclubofco@gmail.com
Campus Wide Scholarship
Since our club has expanded so much and we have been able to raise more and more money each year, we want to offer a fun scholarship for current students.  A few years ago the OU Club of Colorado purchased a bench on campus.  This year we will be offering a $2000 scholarship ($1000 from the club and $1000 matched by the university) for the student that sends us the most creative picture centered/based around the OU Club of Colorado’s donated bench (located by the dorms on Lindsay St).

Guidelines: We ask the pictures be in good taste and sent to ouclubofco@gmail.com.  In addition to the picture, applicants will also have to fill out a short application to be eligible (essay not needed) and send in an unofficial transcript from OU.  The club will post the pictures to our Facebook page and the top 5 pictures with the most “likes” will be the finalists decided on by the scholarship committee.  Email us with any questions or if you would like additional information.
Future Sooner Reception
We are finalizing the details of our upcoming Future Sooner Reception, which will be held on Wednesday, March 13th at 7pm at the University Club in Denver.  If you know someone that is looking at OU and would like to attend the reception, please contact Carissa Cummins at Carissa@ou.edu.  Carissa is the Student Service representative that works with Colorado students.  Official invitations to the event will be sent out soon.

Stoney’s Is Growing & with more Oklahoman’s

Stoney’s Bar and Grill, the home of the OU Club of Colorado for the last 3 years, is growing.   They have opened another location called Stoney’s Full Steam Tavern, and it’s located at  1434 Blake St, Denver , CO 80202 in the LoDo area.

This new bar will be home to the OSU Alumni group the Colorado Cowboys as well as the Iowa St Cyclones Colorado Alumni.

It’s because of the wonderful support from the Alumni, fans and supporters of the OU Club of Colorado, that when they opened up this new venture they first reached out to some more fellow Okies to be their anchor alumni group!

So now if you want a different change of pace to have a bite to eat drop on by Stoney’s new location!  Also when your annoying brother/father/etc is in town and happens to be a Cow Poke fan, you can send them to a great bar, and not have to look at that waving wheat!

NEW YEAR NEWSLETTER

We hope you all had a wonderful holiday season filled with many blessings, friends and family.  The OU Club of Colorado had another record breaking year thanks to the generosity of all our members and fans.  When we were not raising money during the football season, we were quite busy with a number of other events.  We held a Future Sooner Reception in March with the help of the University’s Student Service office to answer questions and give information about OU to Colorado high school students.  In July we held our second annual Sooner Sendoff where about 60 incoming OU students and family members attended to meet before heading off to Norman.  We were very lucky to welcome two new sponsors this year (Patron and Sooner Spectator), making a total of five sponsors for the club.  Additionally, this year we sold more memberships and t-shirts than any other year!  Because of this we really look forward to starting the scholarship process in order to award even more money and scholarships to Colorado students.  In May we offered partial scholarships to 7 Colorado students attending OU this past fall.  Look for more information to come as to how you can apply for our 2013-2014 scholarship.

Cotton Bowl Watch Party
Friday, January 4th, the Sooners will travel to Arlington to play Texas A&M and Heisman trophy winner, Johnny Manziel, in the 76th annual Cotton Bowl Classic. In fact OU will be the only school to play all three Heisman finalists this year: Johnny Manziel (Texas A&M), Manti Te’o (Notre Dame) and Collin Klein (Kansas State).  Kickoff is at 6:00pm MST.  Make sure to come down to Stoney’s to watch the game.  We will have a mini auction, raffles, drink and food specials and more!
OKC Thunder and OU Club of Colorado Night Out
Because of the success of last year’s Thunder/Nuggets outing, we have secured another deal with the Pepsi Center and reserved about 100 tickets for the March 1 Thunder/Nuggets game.  We have reserved club level tickets for $50 each (normally $80).  All seats will be located together in the OU section.  Tickets will be sold on a first come, first served basis and are based on availability.  There are no taxes or additional fees added to your order.  To purchase tickets visit:www.nuggetstix.com/ouclubofcolorado or contact Brad Currier at 303-405-1334 for tickets and questions.  We will host a happy hour prior to the event with more details on that to come.  Please see the attached flyer for more details.
Student Service Representative
Since the number of high school students attending OU from Colorado has continued to grow through the years, we now have a fulltime representative from the Student Service office living here in Denver.  She will be at the game on Friday to answer questions for parents and future students.  She will be set up in the back room of Stoney’s with information on attending OU.  If you or someone you know is looking at OU, please stop by to get all your questions answered!
Scholarship Committee
In the next couple of weeks, we will be sending information on how you or someone you know can apply for our 2013-2014 scholarships.  Currently, we are looking for volunteers to be a part of the scholarship committee.  If you are interested, please email us at ouclubofco@gmail.com.  The time commitment is minimal and will consist of following up with applicants, communicating with the University and meeting in May to review the submissions and pick the recipients.

Future Sooner Reception
Is someone you know thinking about attending OU?  If so, mark this date down in your calendar:  Wednesday, March 13th.  The OU Club of Colorado will be pairing with the Student Service office at OU to hold an informational meeting at the University Club in Denver.  At this reception we will have University representatives that will cover all your questions about attending OU, the application process, important deadlines and any other questions about OU and college
