Fall 2017 Newsletter

State of the Club Address
Welcome to the fall edition of your OU Club of Colorado newsletter. In order to preserve your inboxes, we have elected to go with a quarterly newsletter for this year. With the world of social media, more immediate information will be shared on our Facebook, Twitter, etc. outlets. Now, on with the updates…..

Starting my third and final year as President, we have done some great things these last few years. As far as the reason we exist (no it is not just to drink beer and watch football), our scholarship awards the last three years have totaled over $32,000! This is due to the generosity of our members through membership sales and our sponsors who give so generously to our cause. We have sent nearly 30 Colorado/Wyoming high school students to Norman with scholarship dollars in hand.

Speaking of sponsors, we are starting our 8th season with our premier partner, Stoney’s Bar & Grill. We are truly fortunate to have Stoney and Will as our partners. Each year we work with the VJ Aaron and staff to ensure your game day experience is like no other, whether that is the food special or the new 50″ TVs. Another long term partner is Sooner Spectator Magazine and thanks to Jay Upchurch for donating two subscriptions this year. We have been tasting the Rockies (Coors Light) for three thirsty years. Metro 5280 Homes (Aaron Loggins) is in year two of its sponsorship and is there for all of your home buying and selling needs. We also have several first year sponsors: Pernod Brands, Constellation Brands, and the Wenner Group (Dave Frazier). However the season flows, these partners are here to support us.

While we have an amazing group of officers, we are looking to you for the future of this club. We are looking for energetic go-getters that want to be a part of not only the largest football watch party in the country, but be a part of the annual scholarship giveaway. While my term may be coming to a close, all good things don’t have to come to an end….despite what Geoffrey Chaucer might think. Unlike the exchange in the ISU game last week, our group is looking for a smooth hand-off for a touchdown. Many of you have expressed interest in helping out and I will be reaching out to you soon. If you are interested in volunteering for this amazing organization, please email ouclubofco@gmail.com

Where in Colorado is Your Watch Party (now with 3 front range watch party locations!!)
It is no secret that the OU Club of Colorado has expanded its presence along the front range and it’s because of our great success and demand from all you Sooner Alumni and Fans.  First we made Stoney’s Bar and Grill the largest OU watch party in the nation, with over 500 folks for most games!  Then we added the Colorado Springs Watch Party at the Old Chicago off of Academy at Austin Bluffs Parkway.  The Colorado Springs group is growing each and every week!

Now we are happy to Announce the 3rd Watch Party location is the Denver West Watch Party is now cooking, in the literal and figurative senses. The OU Club of Colorado is offering an alternative watch party experience. We are partnering with Billy Sims BBQ and the Skyline Pub (BSBBQ & SP) to bring you a quieter, smaller, more laid back atmosphere where you can get some barbecue, beers (specials on domestic drafts), and of course each and every OU Football Game!

Our main watch party will always be Stoney’s Bar & Grill and now we will have extra seating for our rival games (saxeT this Saturday) as well as a different flavor location for our fans!

Billy Sims BBQ & Skyline Pub will be host to the Thunder Watch Parties also – don’t tell me you are not getting excited about the new Big 3 in OKC.

It’s been a busy fall! 2 new Watch Party locations, and fundraising for OU Scholarships!

Networking Breakfast Update
Your OU Club of Colorado is still in process of selecting the venue for the upcoming Sooners@Sunrise networking event. We hope this will become a regular event to help support the local Sooner community through building connections in the Denver metropolitan area. The goal is to rotate these networking events to different parts of the city.

If you are interested in hosting one of these breakfasts at your company office, please email us at ouclubofco@gmail.com.  Hosting is a great way of giving back to the Sooner community here in Denver. I record over 2,500 alumni in the area according to LinkedIn. I will be reaching out to you all soon to build this professional group.

Sooner Scoop

We had a great turnout for the OU Club of Colorado Night Out with the Nuggets/Thunder, over 30! Whichever team you were rooting for, we got to see a great game and history made as Westbrook passed the Big O for the most all-time triple-doubles in a season. Here is hoping for a better season for both squads next year.

Too many to count for the opening of Billy Sims BBQ in the Springs earlier this month. We could have used a few more at the Meet & Greet with Billy Sims, but he will be back in June for the opening of the Billy Sims BBQ in Edgewater. Check out their website for more details including the official opening date. We will plan something special during that opening as well. Stay tuned….there might be a few more legends to meet.

Colorado Student Recruitment Night:  Speaking of those scholarship winners, there were almost 70 attendees at the alumni Meet & Greet earlier this month. What A Fall
On behalf of the officers of the OU Club of Colorado, I wanted to thank you for your support this year. With our sponsors and memberships, we raised a little over $10,000 for scholarships. With the match from OU, this is $20,000 in our scholarship fund for future Sooners. If you know of any Colorado high school students interested in going to OU, please lave them reach out to our Rocky Moutain Recruiter, Carissa Cummins, at 720-308-0706 or carissa@ou.edu. Our scholarship committee will be meeting soon and there is still time to apply for the OU Club of Colorado Scholarship.

We had over 3500 come out to the watch parties this season. Special thanks to our officers that were there week in and week out to support the club and our members. Very special thanks to Jeff Farrer and Aaron Nelson (VJ Aaron) for running a great show this season. We hope you liked the changes this year and please keep your suggestions coming as we continue to make this experience the best fan experience in the nation.

We are excited for another great year and congrats to the Sugar Bowl Champion….Top 5 Finisher….SEC Butt Kickin’ Sooners!!!

Sooners in The Springs
We are excited to share that our Sooner NCAA national champion men’s gymnastics team and the National Champion OU Men’s Club team, will be competing in the Rocky Mountain Open gymnastics meet on THIS Saturday, Jan. 14, 2017.  As in previous years, the meet will be at the Air Force Academy and is scheduled to start at  7 p.m. The Hilton Garden Inn in Colorado Springs will be our Sooner headquarters. We will have a rally for the team Saturday afternoon in the lobby of the the Hilton prior to the teams departure to the Air Force Academy for the competition. Feel free to come out after 2 p.m. to cheer loud and prOUd.

This year we have a real opportunity for our teams to repeat as the 2017 national champions and we want to support the squad that has the most national championships in Sooner history!

Sooner Scoop
Our OU Club of Colorado friends in The Springs saw nearly 30 attendees for the Bedlam game. This is a great measure of success and a special shout out to Brittany Eagan for all her help and support making The Springs the second largest watch party on the state!

So, I was going to spotlight one of our officers this newsletter, but instead wanted to relay some exciting news courtesy of one of our officers….Dave Frazier. I am thrilled to share that Dave and his lovely wife Paige are expecting a little Sooner later this summer. Next time you see our VP of Finance, buy him a Sooner Magic shot!

While we are finished with football, anytime our Sooner teams are on TV, come on out to Stoney’s. If you have your membership cards, you can still get all of those great drink specials. Same goes for the OKC Thunder.

OU Has a Path to the Playoffs!

636083370554386580-583867405_maxresdefaultOU has a path to the playoffs!   Ranked #8 in both Coaches and AP Polls, the Sooners take on West Virginia in a top 10 match-up in Prime Time on National TV.  Beat the #9/10 ranked Mountaineers, and OU has OSU (who needs to beat TCU) to make Bedlam the defacto Big 12 Championship game. OSU is ranked #13, and they could be a top 10 match up as well.

Let’s assume Alabama, who has looked in a class by themselves so far, wins out, they are in as the #1 seed and the SEC championship.

Ohio St, needs to beat Michigan dropping Michigan below OU.  The problem, then becomes Wisconsin vs Penn State in the Big Ten championship.  A loss by Penn State to Michigan St in Happy Valley, sends Ohio St to the Big Ten Championship.  They beat Wisconsin to sow up the #2 slot, and OU should pass Michigan, Penn St and Wisconsin.

The third slot looks like it will belong to the ACC in Louisville or Clemson.  If both win out (and they should Louisville travels to Houston & then hosts Kentucky, with Clemson taking on Wake Forest then hosting rival South Carolina) we need Clemson (who would win the Atlantic because they beat Louisville head to head), to lose to the Coastal champ (looking like Virginia Tech).  Would the Playoff Committee pick 2 ACC teams???  This really could be what blocks OU’s chances

The last spot, then comes down to our Sooners fresh off of possibly two top ten victories in a row and winners of the Big 12 or Washington if they win the PAC-12.  If Washington looses to Washington St or to Colorado/Utah in the PAC championship game, they would have 2 losses and should drop below OU as their loss would be more recent.  If Washington wins out, they are likely to stay ahead of OU.

Yes, OU will need some help, but we have a path to the playoff.  Once we are there, we have a shot at the National Championship and Number Eight as the playoffs are a new season.  Of course if we win out and don’t go to the Playoffs, we go to the Sugar Bowl as the Big 12 champ and representative of the Big 12 against the SEC LSU or Florida, again, assuming ‘Bama goes to the playoffs.

Off and Running with Our New Members
Sooner fans, the year has started off interesting for the 2016 squad. Expectations were through the roof. Thankfully, the roof is NOT on fire! 2-2 is better than 1-3 and the Big 12 Championship is still in our sights. With the big saxeT game looming, the excitement is building for our returning members as well as our new members.

Speaking of our new members, I am delighted to share with you all that we had 40 new members sign up with the OU Club of Colorado through the first third of the season. Their membership has helped generate scholarship dollars for the Class of 2021. We have had several members renew for 2016-17, but we have a long way to go to meet last year’s numbers. We know the game next week will be huge, but no matter what the record is for Oklahoma, we still support Colorado high school students looking to go to OU and we hope you do too. As a reminder, your donations are tax deductible and OU matches each donation dollar for dollar.

Coors Light Delights Fans
Special thank you to Andrea and Peter from Coors Distributing Company for their sponsorship and donation to the scholarship fund. We would not be the largest and one of the most successful clubs in the nation without the support of great partners like Coors. As a reminder to those that are new members, we have Coors Light, Blue Moon and Colorado Native IPL as our beers for each and every game. You can also get the specials with your 2016-17 Membership card at Stoney’s any day and time of the week, just let your waitstaff know.

Sooner Scoop
Even though the outcome of the Ohio State game was not what we had hoped, we had a great turnout of 500 fans to meet and greet with Jamelle Holieway and raised more scholarship funds through the verbal auction and membership sales. With the latest game against TCU in the books, this brings the total number of fans to 1600 so far for total attendance.

Don’t forget to follow the OU Club of Colorado on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Each game, don’t forget to text your photos to 303-963-9825 or #ouclubofco. You can do this wherever you are……Stoney’s, the Cotton Bowl, or from your couch.

We have yet another Boomer Breakfast kickoff for the Red River Rivalry Saturday. Kickoff will be 10am MST. Doors will open at 8am, so make sure you arrive early to get that coveted seat. Stoney’s will be rocking with our frenimies from LSU also starting at 10am at Stoney’s South. We need to make sure we have more fans out to support OUr team and this will be the game where if you have an extra seat, invite a new friend to share in the excitement of this game.

Other than our Thursday night tilt with the Cyclones on November 3, stayed tuned for other game times. Your OU Club will be set up at least 1.5 hours before the game selling memberships and t-shirts. And as always, we are always looking for volunteers. We have a great list already and will be reaching out to you soon.

Don’t forget, the OU Club of Colorado is now in The Springs at the Old Chicago Pizza and Taproom at 1579 E. Cheyenne Mountain Blvd. It is a small, but might crowd that comes out to support the Sooners. They have specials for all attendees as well as giveaways. Thank you to the OC for welcoming our Sooner family into their home this season.

Oh, and one more thing……..

Beat the HELL out of saxeT!

OU Alumni Association Newsletter Sept. 22, 2016

We were featured in the September 22, 2016 Newsletter from the OU Alumni Association.  Here’s what they had to say about us!

World’s Largest OU Alumni Club Watch Party: Denver, Colorado

More than 100,000 people gather around Gaylord – Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium six Saturdays in the fall for the hallowed ritual known as tailgating before nearly 90,000 of them funnel into the Palace on the Prairie to watch their Sooners play college football.

The pull of pride for one’s alma mater doesn’t end at I-35 on the way out of town. Across the country, Sooners gather at restaurants, watering holes and homes to root for OU. Among the largest watch parties on any given Saturday is the one thrown by the OU Club of Colorado.

With an average attendance of around 500 Colorado Sooners, the watch party has gained national notoriety as a pacesetter for the celebration of college football allegiance.

So, take a quick glance at the numbers that make up this Super Sooner Soiree.

Football Kick-off Newsletter 8-28-16

It’s Football Time in Colorado
Summer is winding down, the doldrums of the summer sports are coming to a close (thank goodness for the Olympics), blue and orange are dotting the Denver landscape, and the quest for 8 for your Oklahoma Sooners starts Saturday. The quest is also on for the OU Club of Colorado to maintain its reign as one of the best alumni chapters in the nation, which is the result of your amazing continued support. We once again will be raising money for scholarships. Last year we raised nearly $15,000 and are looking for another record-breaking year.

For our opener versus the (soon to be feller Big Twelver???) Houston, we will once again will be at our home away from home, Stoney’s. Game time is 10am MST and doors will open at 8am. Your OU Club of Colorado officers will be on hand to help sign you up for your 2016-17 memberships.

If you follow us on Facebook, you got to see the preview of our short sleeve t-shirts. I am happy to present to you, our long sleeve t-shirt for 2016-17…..

OUr Sponsors for 2016-17
I would like to share with you and thank our sponsors for the upcoming year. We start our seventh year with the best bar in all of Colorado, Stoney’s. They have expanded to 700 seated capacity and 1100 total capacity which means more seating for you! Thank you for year two to Coors Light and Blue Moon. Prices will still be $3.50 for CL and $4.50 for BM. We are delighted to add, for you craft beer lovers, Colorado Native’s India Pale Lager for $3.25 a bottle. We will again have some tremendous giveaways and one special giveaway at the end of the year.

Not a beer drinker? We are excited to offer more options for you liquor peeps out there. Brown-Forman joins us this year and with that comes three tremendous options; Heradurra Tequila, Finlandia Vodka, and Jack Daniels Whiskey. Whether it’s a mixed drink, or a shot, we will have weekly drink specials that are sure to satisfy your taste buds.

Lastly, we welcome another new sponsor, Mighty Swell. Beer or straight liquor not your cup of tea, Mighty Swell provides tasty sparkling cocktails that are making a new splash in Colorado. We may have a little surprise tasting for those of you planning to attend that first game.

We are delighted to again offer substantial discounts for our partners with Sooner Legends Hotel and Sooner Spectator Magazine with 10 percent of your stay when you show your membership card and $10 off the yearly subscription. We would not be successful without our sponsors and partners.

Meet & Greet with a Sooner Legend
The OU Club of Colorado is excited to bring you another Sooner legend. This QB trotted onto the field in 1985 after Troy Aikman went down versus our nemesis, Miami. Even though we lost that day, this magician of the wishbone guided a team on the ropes to our 6th national championship. That Sooner is none other than, Jamelle Holieway and he will be at Stoney’s for the biggest non-conference game of the season, OU vs “The” Ohio State University. He will be signing autographs prior to the game and will have some memorabilia available to purchase. Hell, we might even auction off a football signed by everyone’s favorite Sooner from 1977.

Don’t want to fight the crowds? You have the opportunity to meet with Jamelle in an exclusive lunch at 11:30am on September 17. Only 30 lucky Sooner fans have the opportunity to enjoy this opportunity. Spots are filling up fast, so email ouclubofco@gmail.com to reserve your primo spot today!

I wanted to say a special THANK YOU to our officers that rotated off this past summer, Brandon Todd and Lori Taylor. We would not be THE most successful and fun alumni chapter in the nation without dedicated individual like them. We also welcome some newcomers to the team that puts on the largest watch party in the nation. These events would not happen if it were not for the great team here in Colorado. If you are interested in volunteering, please email ouclubofco@gmail.com.

Our team hopes you will be out to as many games as possible to support the OU Club of Colorado and your Oklahoma Sooners. I encourage you to introduce yourself to as many Sooner fans as possible and don’t be afraid to pull up a chair and share in the excitement of another great football season.

See you Saturday!

June 2016 Newsletter

The OU Club of Colorado would like to thank you for your support of and interest in the inaugural Crimson & Cream Golf Classic. Due to low registration, we will be postponing this event until 2017. Please join me in thanking the committee (Jeff, Dave, and Ed) for their hard work. One thing I would ask of our members is to support these events earlier as there were a lot of last minute inquiries and some disappointment when people learned the event was postponed. We need your support much earlier in the process and will do our part to relay the information as it becomes available.
